Knowledge is power, and there is an unbelievable amount of information on the internet about energy efficiency and waste minimization. There is so much information here that if you explore these sites in depth and understand the content, you will be an expert in the field.

News - (March 2010) The Ohio Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program is about to begin!! Save even more money if you need a new major appliance!

The Ohio Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program will disperse over $10,000,000 in rebates to help Ohioans save money by encouraging the replacement of old, inefficient appliances (clothes washers, dishwashers, electric heat pump water heaters, high-efficiency gas storage water heaters, and refrigerators) with new qualified energy efficient ENERGY STAR® appliances.

The program will start on March 26, 2010. Rebates are limited to one rebate per appliance type per household and will be awarded through a mail-in rebate process.

Ohio residents who purchase a qualified ENERGY STAR® appliance from an Ohio retail location after the program starts and while funds are available will be eligible for the rebate. Online purchases are not eligible for a rebate. Purchases that are made prior to the program starting are not eligible to receive a rebate

Over 89,000 rebates will be offered for qualified ENERGY STAR® appliances to Ohio consumers.

Ohio EPA - Office of Pollution Prevention - An independent office within Ohio EPA that was established with a goal of providing information and resources to help businesses achieve waste minimization and compliance with the environmental regulations.

Ohio Consumers Council - Ohio residential utility consumer advocate.

Duke Energy - Energy Saving Tools - Tools include 'Online Home Energy Analysis' and 'Energy Savings Calculator'. You can also sign up here for a Home Energy House Call. and get a free Energy Efficiency Starter Kit.

Energy Hog - Education on home energy efficiency. Sections for adults and kids. Home energy savings calculator.

Energy Star - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency site with a ton of information. Energy efficient appliances. Sections on products, home improvement, new homes. Separate kids section. These are the folks that give Energy Star ratings to appliance and other products to let you know if they are energy efficient or not.

Rocky Mountain Institute - Founder Amory Lovins is one of the pioneers and gurus of waste minimization and energy efficiency. Great free publications available here. Comprehensive and cutting edge stuff.

Energy Design Resources - An organization with information on how to design and build energy efficient buildings.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy - DOE - A U.S. Department of Energy site with information on alternative energy technologies.

 

Lighting Efficiency / CFLs

Recycling CFLs – Though in the balance, CFLs are environmentally friendly, the do contain mercury and should be recycled properly when they burn out. IKEA and Home Depot are two companies that claim to recycle CFLs.

Recycling CFLs - A Hamilton County Solid Waste Management site with information on recycling CFLs, as well as ways to recycle other household products.

Earth Easy - Comprehensive information on CFLs and LEDs. The Earth Easy site also has lots of ideas for environmentally sustainable living.

 

Climate Change / Global Warming

Climate 411 - Climate 411 is the voice of the experts at Environmental Defense Fund, providing plain-English explanations of climate change science, technology, policy, and news.

Global Warming Map - Click on your part of the world on their global map, and see the impacts of global warming on your region.

World Wildlife Fund - Climate Change - Information and solutions to climate change from the WFF, a well-respected environmental organization.

350 - Climate change web site. According to many experts, 350 parts per million (ppm) CO2 is the safe line for our global climate. We’re in the danger zone now at 387 ppm. This group is trying to get us back under 350.

David Suzuki Foundation - One of Canada's leading environmentalists. Sections on Global Warming, Conservation, Sustainability, The Oceans.
